What is SR22 Insurance?
If you have been part of incidents that have turned you into a “high risk” driver such as driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, driving without insurance, driving with a revoked license, and more, you will have to get SR22 insurance. Washington requires this endorsement to be placed on your insurance policy in order for you to meet the state’s minimum liability requirements. The SR22 insurance form stands as proof that the drivers deemed as “high risk” have liability for their cars.
Types of SR-22 Forms
There are three types of SR-22s. You’ll want to ensure you obtain the proper kind or you’ll be in violation of court orders, which will mean having your driver’s license suspended again. Below are the three types of financial responsibility insurance certificates in Washington.
- Operator’s Certificate – This certificate proves financial responsibility when you’re driving somebody else’s car.
- Owner’s Certificate – If you own a vehicle, this certificate will cover your car. All of your vehicles must be listed on the SR-22 or the form must state that it’s been issued for “all owned vehicles” in order to be compliant.
- Operators-Owners Certificate – This type of SR-22 is the most common kind. It covers you for all vehicles, both for owned and non-owned.
Washington drivers are required to carry liability limits of at least $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 bodily injury per accident, and $10,000 property damage.
The property damage will provide coverage for the driver and
whomever is driving the vehicle in the case of an accident.
If you or a family member are driving and involved in a accident the insurance company will pay for damages occurred from the accident up to $25,000. If there is damages above and beyond that you will be responsible for the remaining money owed.

If Washington requires a driver to have an SR22 form, he will have to get in touch with a licensed insurance provider and check that his insurance policy meets the above minimum requirements regarding the liability limits. In the state of Washington, auto insurance providers are not required to offer SR22 insurance, so the driver may see themselves forced to switch insurance providers so that they can find one that also offers the SR22. However, a lot of providers can offer the SR22 insurance, but they will usually charge a higher price.
Washington requires that an SR-22 endorsement be carried for thirty-six (36) consecutive months. If the policy is not renewed at least fifteen (15) days prior to expiration, a letter will be sent to the state, resulting in suspension of the driver’s license. Once the policy has been renewed, the state will reinstate the driver’s license. It is highly recommended that the insured renew their policy at least forty-five (45) days ahead of time.
