Answers to All Your SR22 Questions
SR22 insurance is something of a misnomer. The phrase “SR22 insurance” is actually a term used to describe a proof of coverage requirement that applies to some drivers.
In many states, certain high-risk drivers may be required to get an SR22 certificate of insurance. This certificate proves that the individual has the required car insurance and is meeting the state’s financial and liability responsibility requirements.
In other words, SR22 insurance isn’t really insurance at all. It’s a certificate that proves you have auto insurance. You may also hear it called an SR22 bond or a certificate of financial responsibility.
Whatever you call it, it’s something that many drivers need. If you’ve been told you need SR22 insurance, you’ve come to the right place. We can help you get the coverage you need.
This is a complicated question, but here’s the simple answer. You need SR22 insurance if your state’s DMV tells you that you need SR22 insurance.
SR22 insurance isn’t a requirement that auto insurance companies impose on drivers. It’s a legal requirement that states demand of some drivers.
In general, certain drivers who are considered “high risk” may be required to get SR22 insurance. For example, you might need SR22 insurance if you’ve been convicted of a DUI, if you have a lot of infractions on your driving record, if you let your previous auto insurance coverage lapse, or if your driver’s license has been suspended.
As you can imagine, a lot of drivers fall into these categories. You’re not alone. SR22 insurance is a very common requirement, and we can help you get it.
SR22 insurance will provide proof that you have purchased the minimum liability coverage required in your state.
States typically require all drivers to carry liability insurance, which can be broken down into property damage liability and bodily injury liability. This insurance covers the property damage and injuries that another driver might suffer if you cause a crash, up to the policy limit. Liability insurance does not cover damage to your own car or injuries that you might experience if you cause a crash.
Some states also require drivers to carry additional types of auto insurance, including personal injury protection (PIP) insurance.
You may also purchase other types of coverage, like collision and comprehensive insurance to cover your own vehicle, but these insurance types are typically not required by state law.
See your state’s auto insurance requirements for more details.
Don’t worry. You won’t need SR22 insurance forever. Although the requirements vary from state to state, you can expect the requirement to be lifted after a few years or so. In many states, drivers who need SR22 insurance are required to carry it for three years.
During this time, make sure you maintain coverage and avoid crashes, tickets and DUIs. This is the best way to avoid having to get SR22 insurance again in the future.
If your state considers you to be a high-risk driver, you may be required to carry SR22 insurance to have your license reinstated. This is true whether or not you own a car.
SR22 insurance proves that you have the liability insurance needed to pay for any injuries or property damage that you may cause. Because you can get into a crash in your car or in somebody else’s car, this requirement stands whether or not you own a car. If you do not own a car and you need SR22 insurance, you will need to get non-owner SR22 insurance.
In some situations, you may be required to purchase SR22 insurance even though you don’t own a car.
For example, let’s say someone gets a DUI. In order to get his license reinstated so he can start driving again, he may need SR22 insurance. But what if he doesn’t have a car? In this case, he will need non-owner SR22 insurance. This document will prove that he has the coverage he needs when he is driving any vehicle.
Although it might seem a little strange at first, the requirement does make sense. SR22 insurance is supposed to prove that you are financially responsible for any crash that you might cause – regardless of whose car you’re driving. Non-owner SR22 insurance is a common requirement, and we can help you get the coverage you need.
Your insurer may charge you a small fee for filing the SR22 certificate. This should not be a major expense.
That’s the good news. The bad news is that you will likely pay higher premiums compared to drivers who do not need SR22 insurance.
This is because you are considered a high-risk driver. Additionally, the same factors that resulted in your having to get SR22 insurance in the first place – like getting a DUI or driving without insurance – will also impact your auto insurance premiums.
Exactly how much you pay will depend on many factors, possibly including:
- Your driving record, including the factors that resulted in your needing SR22 insurance
- Your age and gender
- Your credit score (in some states)
- Where you live
- How much you drive
- What type of car you drive
As you can see, a lot goes into determining your rate. Don’t worry. We can help you find the best rate available, by checking the options available through all our insurance carrier partners.
If you are required to carry SR22 insurance, you should not let your coverage lapse. Doing so could cause even bigger headaches and fines. Also, your insurer will be required to notify the DMV if your insurance coverage lapses.
To avoid problems, keep your SR22 insurance active.
However, eventually your SR22 obligation will end. Once the state no longer requires you to carry SR22 insurance, you can tell your insurer that you no longer need an SR22 certificate.
But remember – you will still need to meet your state’s minimum requirements for auto insurance coverage. Letting your insurance lapse could put you right back at square one, so don’t take any risks.
You may need to pay for your entire coverage period of SR22 insurance up front. Although this can seem burdensome, it will help ensure that you maintain the coverage you need through the period. If you are making monthly payments, make sure you have sufficient funds set aside, and consider setting up automatic payments.
Many factors impact your insurance premiums. These factors include your driving record, as well as where you live, how old you are, and many other criteria.
Different insurance carriers will treat these various factors differently. That’s why one insurer may offer you a vastly different rate compared to another insurer.
Fortunately, we work with multiple insurance carriers, so you always get the best rates available, without a lot of legwork. Learn more about us here.
