Zz_North Carolina SR22 Insurance

Even though North Carolina does not require drivers to carry SR22 insurance you are still usually required to carry an SR22 if you have moved from a state that you were previously required to carry an SR22. This is because you must still meet the requirements legally mandated by your former state. According to the current laws in North Carolina this is not the case but, it is always best to check with your local DMV for the most up-to-date laws.

If you are licensed to drive an automobile in the state of North Carolina, you are required by law to be covered by an automobile insurance policy. If you apply for your driver’s license in North Carolina, you will have to show proof of insurance before you are issued a license.

The owner of any type of vehicle which travels on a state-maintained road is required by law to carry at least basic liability coverage on that vehicle. Liability insurance covers any vehicle to which you might unintentionally cause damage, such as in a wreck or collision with a parked vehicle. Your liability coverage does not allow for repairing damage done to your own vehicle.

The next level of coverage is collision. Collision covers any damage inflicted upon your vehicle by another driver. This type of coverage is maintained by most responsible vehicle owners, although it is not mandatory.

Comprehensive coverage encompasses more complete vehicle protection. This pays for damage that may happen to your vehicle that is not related to an auto accident. It covers theft, glass breakage, and hail damage, among other mishaps. Dents from a fallen tree limb or miss-thrown ball would fall into the comprehensive coverage category, subject to your deductible.

It is wise to review policies when they are renewed, to avoid surprises when the premiums come due. If you have an adult child, who has his / her own policy, but was once listed on yours, check to make sure they have been taken off your policy. If that person is still listed on your policy and they accrue points from a moving violation, those points will be applied to your policy also, causing your rate to increase substantially. If your adult child gets married and a spouse is added to his / her policy, that spouse will be added to yours as well. Make sure that you know what you are paying for.

If you have a teen-aged child who is getting their driver’s license for the first time, you may find that it is less expensive to purchase an individual policy for that child. An agent, or some internet research can answer that question for you.

The internet is an excellent tool for researching SR22 insurance companies. You can find all major companies and many smaller local companies who have websites. You will be able to compare rates and coverage’s, which will equip you to make informed decisions about your North Carolina auto insurance coverage.
