Massachusetts SR22 INSURANCE

Massachusetts SR22 INSURANCE

Massachusetts SR22 INSURANCE

SR22 insurance is a certificate of financial responsibility that is issued by an auto insurance company. Most states require OUI/DUI offenders to carry SR22 insurance. Massachusetts does not. However, if you live in another state and get an OUI in Massachusetts, your home state will likely require an SR22 filing. Also, if you get an OUI in Massachusetts, and then move from Massachusetts to another state, one that does require an SR22 filing, you will then need to purchase SR22 insurance.

Does Massachusetts Have SR-22 Insurance Requirements?

No, Massachusetts does not have SR-22 insurance filing requirements.

Still, you’re not off the hook if you’ve committed a serious traffic violation. You must still carry the state’s minimum liability insurance requirements and you can expect the annual premiums for that insurance to be higher than average. That’s because providers see you as a higher risk to insure than drivers with clean driving records.

Can I get non-owner Massachusetts SR22 insurance?

Yes. Non owner Massachusetts SR22 insurance allows the named insured driver to drive any motor vehicle that they are given permission to drive. If you purchase a Massachusetts non-owners SR22 insurance policy, make sure you do not drive any vehicle you have not been given express consent to drive and ensure that the vehicle in question is insured by the owner.

An Massachusetts SR22 non-owners insurance policy is a great way for drivers who do not own a motor vehicle and who may not have regular access to a motor vehicle to meet the state’s drivers license reinstatement insurance requirements. Purchasing non-owners liability coverage will enable drivers to satisfy the states SR22 insurance requirements without owning a vehicle.

There are three types of Massachusetts SR22 certificates available:

Massachusetts SR22 Operators Certificate – this covers the driver for the operation of any non-owned vehicle they have been given permission to drive.

Massachusetts SR22 Owners Certificate – this covers the driver to drive any vehicles owned by the driver. The certificate may be issued with the details of the make and model of the driver’s automobile or it may cover any vehicle owned by the driver.

Massachusetts SR22 Operators-Owners Certificate – This covers any vehicles owned by the driver and any vehicles that are not owned but the driver has been given permission to drive.

The property damage will provide coverage for the driver and
whomever is driving the vehicle in the case of an accident.

If you or a family member are driving and involved in a accident the insurance company will pay for damages occurred from the accident up to $25,000. If there is damages above and beyond that you will be responsible for the remaining money owed.

Regardless of your driving history, we’re here to help. Ready to get started? Sit back, relax,
and discover an easier way to get the coverage you need.

Minimum insurance coverage in Massachusetts

Massachusetts does not use the SR-22 form because drivers are already sufficiently covered and therefore meet the financial responsibility of an SR22. Note that, in Massachusetts, all drivers are required to hold the following minimum insurance coverage:

  • Bodily injury to others – $20,000 per person; $40,000 per accident
  • Personal injury protection (PIP) – $8,000 per person, per accident
  • Bodily injury caused by an uninsured auto – $20,000 per person; $40,000 per accident
  • Damage to someone else’s property – $5,000 per accident

Reinstating Driving Privileges With SR22 in Massachusetts

Without the use of the SR22 insurance form in Massachusetts, you will need to follow different steps in order to reinstate your license after a suspension. During the suspension, you can apply for a hardship license, if applicable, by completing a hearing at a select RMV site.

If you bring all required documentation and the hearing officer approves your request, you will be provided with a license that bears an “H” and possibly also a “Z” to indicate the types of restrictions applied to your driver’s license.

There is no guarantee you will obtain the hardship license, because it will be decided at the discretion of the RMV hearing officer.

How to Get SR22 Insurance in Massachusetts

SR-22 forms are only issued by insurance companies as proof of your qualified coverage per the state-issued requirements. Since there is no required SR22 insurance form in Massachusetts, you might need to shop around with different insurance companies until one can provide you with the required paperwork for other state violations.
